Documentary About the Media Youth Center & Media Hoops
We are planning ahead! Please take 2 minutes to complete the following survey and RSVP form for each of your children. Space is limited and registrations will close on-time, so even RSVP’ing “Maybe” will help you save a spot for your child.
Media Hoops Basketball Program: January News!
Below is a comprehensive update on Media Hoops including key dates, make-up games, special events, awards, all-star teams, and summer program. The topics are listed in approximate “chronological order” and go all the way through next year’s Winter League.
Please read all of it.
#1. Make Up Games Scheduled!
We will make up as many games as we can. See the bottom of this email for Rescheduled Games.
#2. Further Weather Related Cancellations
Games and practices will still be held whenever possible. We make cancellation decisions as late as possible in order to try and fit in the games. School closures don’t necessarily mean that the Media Youth Center Gym is closed.
Please check the “Announcements” area in the right hand corner of our website www.MediaHoops.com or our Facebook Fanpage for the most current information. (Our broadcast emails can land in spam boxes or bounce sometimes.) Phone calls are slow and expensive but we’ll try to send more automated voice messages too. Your coach is ultimately responsible for notifications, but the safest bet is to, “Check the Website.”
#3. All-Star Team Announcements!
There will be 6 All-Star Teams consisting of 12 players for the following AGE groups: Boys (9, 10, 11, 12, and 14 and under) and Girls (Age 12 and under.) “Age” is determined by how old players are by Sept 1st, 2013.
Each grade/team goes to our own tournament plus 2 other tournaments in nearby communities. We usually know the schedule by Mid-February with the games typically held in March. In total players will play between 10-15 games. Practices will begin as soon as possible given the coaches schedule and gym availability.
Participation doesn’t cost anything. This is a special part of the Media Hoops program that most other leagues do not provide.
#4. Team Selection Process: Coaches & Player Nominations Due – Jan 16th!
All-Star Team Selection Process: Coaches must volunteer by January 16th and will be chosen by the Basketball Program Director and Basketball Committee of the Board of Directors. Players must be nominated by team coaches by January 16th as well.
Once Coaches are selected and players are nominated, the Coach and Basketball Director “construct” the teams. All-Star Teams may not necessarily consist of “the most skilled” players. Attitude, coachability, availability to fully participate, sportsmanship, size, and type of player given the offense and defense the coach will be running are all factors.
#5. Hoopla Day is Jan 25th, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Penncrest High School – Save the Date!
HOOPLA DAY! is the Media Youth Center’s annual Media Hoops Fun and Fund-Raising day involving everyone in the league. In lieu of our regular basketball games that day, we provide a series of activities, games, competitions, carnival tables, music, raffle baskets, silent auction, snacks, entertainment, and some other surprises. Keep an eye out for another email with full details. The kids will have a blast!
P.S. At Hoopla Day this year, EVERYONE — ALL team players, parents, coaches, and volunteers will be in the “Big Shot” Group Photo. Please be on the main court at 11 a.m. Let’s fill the court with 1,000 participants!
#6. Player and Coach Award Nominations Accepted Starting Jan 25th
Will your child win the Sportsmanship Award or MVP Award this year?
In Mid-March at the Media Youth Center “Hall of Fame” Banquet, the following Media Hoops awards will be presented. One (1) Coach of the Year; Three (3) MVP Awards (one each) for 7th-9th Grade Girls, 9th-11th Boys, and A League; and 12 total (12) Sportsmanship Awards for one player from each league.
Nominations will be accepted on-line beginning on Jan 25th. You will receive another email that lists the criteria used in evaluating the winners.
#7. Team Parent Award Nominations Accepted Starting Jan 25th
Will you win the “Team Parent Award?” You’ll receive the criteria in a separate email.
#8. Basketball Curriculum In-Progress
We’ve been watching coaches very closely to see “what” and “how” basketball is being taught and learned. Our first outline on the Curriculum is nearly complete.
We are next assembling a “Curriculum Committee” of Board Members, Coaches, and Parents who want their own knowledge and contributions to dramatically impact the lives of players in the Rose-Tree Media School District and Wallingford Swarthmore School District for generations.
Are you interested in helping make Media Hoops a national model for the best practices of youth basketball — and making sure your child and friends turn into great players?
#9. Play-Offs to be Held the Last 2 Weeks in February
The schedule will be announced as soon as possible. We are working around some weather related make up games. This should be the most exciting Championship series ever.
#10. Master of Ceremonies, Color Commentator, Media Marvel
Do you know parents or students who would like to stream live video of the games or announce them? How about taking photos, putting items on the TV monitors, playing music, controlling the speakers and airwaves? Sports events include a lot more than just the athletes. Email firstname.lastname@example.org about Media Hoops “Production” Internships.
#11. End of Year Celebration & Individual Team Awards (End of February)
A special end-of-year celebration for all players is being planned for the end of February. At this event all players who were nominated for the Hall of Fame/League Sportsmanship and MVP awards will be recognized and coaches may present individual team awards/recognition.
#12. Post-Season Player Evaluations & Team Parity
How much better at basketball is your child getting this year?
New! Coaches will complete Post-Season skill and attitude evaluations. These and others collected during the Spring, Summer, and Fall programs will give all coaches and staff the information they need to make sure our teams improve each year.
We know “team parity” is an important issue for parents and players even though it is often in conflict with carpool requests and the desire of many volunteer coaches to coach their own child and a few of their friends.
Our goal for each year is to ensure that each team balanced skill level and athletic ability and that no team receives a disproportionate number of the best players.
#12. Hall of Fame Award Banquet – March 15th – Save the Date
The purpose of the MYC Hall of Fame & Awards Dinner is to recognize, honor, and perpetuate the names and accomplishments of those people past and present whose contributions of time, talent, and/or treasure have been instrumental to the formation, evolution, or growth of the MYC in fulfilling its mission.
The selection criteria for potential MYC Hall of Famers require that inductees (A) be current or past (living or posthumous) benefactors, officials, volunteers, coaches, parents, players, etc., (B) be significant contributors of time, treasure, and/or talent to Media Youth Center, (C) be role models for the youth of our community, and (D) have high ethical standards.
The second class of the MYC Hall of Fame is targeted to honor 3-5 inductees, at a dinner planned for March 15, 2014. It is at this dinner that the Media Hoops Coach of the Year, Parent of the Year, MVP and League Sportsmanship Awards will be presented.
#13. Spring Skills Clinics
This year we hope to provide a structured way for kids to continue playing basketball after the Winter season ends. From Mid-March/April through May we hope to have an 8 – 10 week series of grade level clinics held on weekends. At these clinics we will utilize many of the best drills and training techniques for inclusion into the Summer and next Winter’s program. There will be some really fun/social activities incorporated into the skill training.
Anyone who participates in the Spring and Summer program should see their skill level increase dramatically over players who don’t stay active in Media Hoops. We know that many players also participate in baseball and soccer so we’ll be asking for parent input on the best times.
#14. Summer League Registration Starts Soon!
Our summer league occurs from Mid-June through Mid-August and involves 4th – 11th grade boys and girls. Everyone is welcome and we draw players from throughout Delaware County. Teams are created from players who register as individuals (just like in the Winter League) BUT we also allow full teams to register. These are often teams from other Summer Recreation leagues and CYO affiliated teams.
Games are played Sunday through Thursday evenings with weekends dedicated to skill development practices involving each grade/age level. We want all CYO and School teams in our area to get better and we’ll provide year-round training for them to do so.
#15. Next Year’s Winter League Improvements & Pre-Registration
For next year, we are improving our registration, curriculum, training, scheduling, and evalutions, for example, early and online registration, digital drills and skills lessons for coaches and players, 1.5 – 2 hour block practice schedules involving all players in a grade focusing on skill development via stations (like in clinics) rather than having individual coaches take on training just their players.
These improvements will continue to elevate Media Hoops over other lessor local programs to further make us the premiere basketball program in Delaware County as we have been for 70 years.
In fact, Pre-Registrations for next Winter will begin in FEBRUARY of this year, so we can better anticipate numbers of players and teams, and layout the league schedule far in advance.
